Freedom Campervans

Julie's take

Freedom Campervans is a long-established, family-owned New Zealand operator. They're a budget-friendly choice, not a premium one — the fleet runs from 2008 to 2010, so expect some wear and tear and a basic, well-used interior rather than anything fresh or modern. If a newer motorhome matters to you, look elsewhere. If keeping costs down matters more, they're worth a look.

One thing they do better than most: no bond deducted from your bank account. It's a credit card imprint only, which is one less headache when you're travelling.

Branches sit close to Auckland and Christchurch Airports. If you need pickup or drop-off at Queenstown, Dunedin, Wellington, Nelson, the Picton Ferry Terminal, or Greymouth Train Station, you can arrange it — but only in advance, and it comes with a relocation fee. Running late? You can pre-arrange a $100 after-hours or contactless collection so you're not stuck.

Pickup itself is straightforward. Freedom Campers run a free transfer on your first and last day, to and from the airport and nearby hotels or motels. At the branch, a staff member walks you through the whole vehicle personally before you drive off, so you're not figuring things out on the road.

If something goes wrong — an accident, mainly — call the number on your rental contract straight away. You can also reach Freedom Campers Reservations toll-free on 0800 325 939 if you need help sorting things out.

This supplier suits budget-conscious travellers, backpackers, and anyone who'd rather put their money towards seeing the country than into a newer van. If that's you, the trade-off is worth it.

One more thing: if you're crossing both islands, book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry well ahead in summer, and check with Freedom Campers that your specific vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you commit to dates.
