Happy

Happy Campers offer a large range of campervans, you are sure to find the perfect vehicle with Happy Campers. They offer low cost, reliable campervan hire in both Auckland and Christchurch.

You can learn more about the Happy Campers fleet in New Zealand by selecting from the vehicles listed below.

Julie's take

Happy Campers is all about getting around New Zealand cheaply. The fleet is basic and includes older vehicles, so don't expect anything modern or polished. If comfort and newer gear matter more to you than price, look elsewhere — but if you just need reliable wheels and a bed, this works fine.

Every van comes with basic cooking gear: cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, a toaster if the van has 240v power, and a kettle (gas or electric). Bedding isn't included — you'll need to add it on as an extra, so factor that into your budget.

One genuine perk: Happy Campers has teamed up with Mobil for an 8 cent per litre discount at Mobil stations around the country. On a longer trip that adds up.

Pickup is easy if you plan for it. They run free transfers from Auckland and Christchurch airports, and from selected nearby accommodation, on both pickup and drop-off day. You'll get a pre-checkin email with a link to fill out before you arrive — do this in advance. I'd still build in some extra time at the depot for the handover itself, so you're not rushed and can ask questions before hitting the road.

If something goes wrong on the road, Happy Campers has 24/7 roadside assistance — just call the number and they'll sort you out.

For the vehicle itself, start with the Happy Horizon. It sleeps up to 3, has two beds, a kitchen with gas cooker and fridge, a solar panel, and it's fully self-contained — everything you need for a straightforward NZ road trip without paying for extras you won't use.

This supplier is best suited to budget-conscious travellers, backpackers, and younger travellers who don't mind a basic camper and would rather put their money into the trip itself.

Doing both islands? Book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing early if you're travelling in summer, and double-check your van is cleared for ferry travel before you lock in dates. Booking with Happy Campers also gets you 10% off your Bluebridge crossing.
