Lucky Campervans in New Zealand

Lucky Rentals is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing independent tourism brands

DriveNow expert's take

Lucky Campers is built for the backpacker market. If you're after affordable pricing and don't mind an older van with a basic internal fit-out, this is a solid pick. Don't expect a shiny new fleet — the vans are a little worn, and that's the trade-off for the lower price.

One thing they do better than most: an 8 cent per litre discount at Mobil stations across New Zealand. Just scan the barcode on your key tag at the pump. Over a few weeks of driving, that adds up.

There's no age restriction with Lucky Campers, which sets them apart from a lot of suppliers. You just need a current, valid licence for the whole hire period. Probationary licences from Australia or New Zealand are fine. International digital licences aren't accepted, so bring the physical card.

Pickup is straightforward — Lucky Campers run airport-to-depot transfers, so you're not stuck figuring out public transport with your bags after a long flight.

If something goes wrong on the road, you're given a 24 hour roadside assistance number at pickup. Call that number and they'll sort you out.

For vehicles, we point most people to the Lucky Roadie. It suits two people who want a bit of space without paying premium prices. It's self-contained too, so you can freedom camp some nights instead of paying for a powered site every stop.

If you're doing both islands, book your ferry crossing early — summer sailings fill up fast. Also check your van is cleared for ferry travel before you commit to dates. One perk here: Bluebridge Ferry gives Lucky Camper customers a 10% discount, so it's worth booking direct with them once your dates are locked in.
