Pacific Horizon is a family-run motorhome company built around comfort and quality. If you're after something more upmarket than the standard hire fleet, with friendly, personal service to match, this is a strong pick.

Their standout offering is the Gasless Vehicle Guarantee, available for $80/day (subject to change). It gets you a vehicle that's fully independent of gas — boosted battery and solar capacity, induction cooktop, microwave, and a diesel heater and hot water system. Handy if you're planning to freedom camp or just don't want to deal with gas bottles.

Pickup takes longer here than at most places, and that's by design. After you've signed the Rental Vehicle Agreement and had your licence checked, a Pacific Horizon team member walks you around the whole motorhome — inside and out — and shows you how everything works. Budget 45-60 minutes for this. Don't plan to pick up and drive straight off; build the time into your first-day itinerary. You'll also get a detailed onboard manual plus travel info and maps, all free.

If something goes wrong on the road, Pacific Horizon runs an On-Road Care process. Minor repairs up to NZ$100 can be sorted without prior approval if you're not at fault. Anything over that needs approval first. Keep every itemised receipt — you'll need them for reimbursement. Their team is generally responsive and easy to deal with when issues come up.

For the fleet, we'd point most people to the 2+1 first. It's compact, stylish, and well thought out — a fully equipped interior, flexible living space, and a mid-vehicle king bed layout that's a bit different from the usual campervan setup. Good balance of freedom and comfort for exploring NZ.

Best suited to travellers who want a premium experience and are happy to pay a bit more for comfort, quality and a well-equipped vehicle. If your trip crosses both islands, book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry well ahead in summer, and confirm the vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you lock in your dates.
