Julie's take

Tui Sleepervans is part of Tui Campers, a well-established, family-owned New Zealand operator. They've got a good range of self-contained campers and prices are generally competitive.

Branches sit close to Auckland and Christchurch airports. If you're flying into Queenstown, Dunedin, Wellington, Nelson, arriving via Picton Ferry Terminal, or coming through Greymouth Train Station, Tui can arrange pickup or drop-off there too — but only with prior arrangement, and there's a relocation fee attached. If you're going to land after hours, you can pre-arrange a $100 after-hours fee so you're not stuck waiting for the branch to open.

One thing to know before you book: the fleet spans 2008 to 2012, so the vehicle you get can vary in age and condition depending on the model. If having a newer camper matters to you, check the specific vehicle details before you lock in a booking.

The pickup itself is well handled. Tui runs a free transfer service on your first and last day, picking you up from the airport or nearby hotels and motels. At the branch, a dedicated staff member walks you through the vehicle personally — they make sure you know every feature before you drive off.

If something goes wrong on the road — an accident, for instance — you contact Tui straight away using the number printed on your rental contract. You can also call Tui Campers Reservations toll-free on 0800 324 939 if you need help.

Tui suits budget-conscious travellers who want a practical, self-contained camper without paying premium prices for a brand-new vehicle. Couples and friends who'd rather have good inclusions and friendly service than the newest van on the road will get on well here.

For a first-time look at the fleet, start with the Deluxe sleepervan. It's compact, self-contained, and gives couples the freedom of a campervan with a more comfortable camping setup.

Doing both islands? Book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing early if you're travelling in summer — they fill up. And confirm your Tui vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you commit to your dates.
